ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s soccer team opens exhibition play this Friday afternoon at Carolina Day Athletic Complex when the Bulldog host Appalachian State starting at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

The Carolina Day Athletic Complex is located away from the school at 2355 Sweeten Creek Road.

Friday’s match is the first of three exhibition tilts scheduled for the Bulldogs. Asheville will host NCAA Tournament clubs Charlotte (Aug. 20) and Clemson (Aug 23) at Greenwood Field. Matt Kern’s club opens the regular season at home on Aug. 29 vs. USC Upstate.

The Bulldogs played the Apps last year on the road and fell, 5-0. ASU went 4-7-7 in 2013. Kern looks forward to Friday’s match.

“The group is really looking forward to our first exhibition match against Appalachian State on Friday,” stated Kern. “ASU is always very organized defensively and put a lot of pressure on the ball.

“We expect to experiment with different ways to beat their high pressure,” added Kern. “The game should be a great learning experience for the boys.”

Friday’s exhibition match will be a homecoming for two Bulldogs players who played at high school soccer at Carolina Day. They include sophomore forward Grady Bradshaw and red-shirt freshman defender Cy Gourlay.
