ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team got two goals from Kaitlyn Eckert and Paige Trent as the Bulldogs opened the spring season with a 5-0 victory over The Citadel at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.
Amanda Knapp opened the scoring with a left-footed blast before Eckert tallied her first goal to give Asheville a 2-0 lead at halftime. Shenny Lenhart was credited with an assist.
Eckert scored early in the second half to push the margin to 3-0. Trent finished the scoring by tallying the final two goals of the match for a 5-0 victory.
Bulldog men's coach Matt Kern served as the women's team head coach with Michelle Demko in Spain working with the US-Under 23 National Team.
"I thought the women were very fun to watch today. They were committed to getting numbers forward and defending high up the field," stated Kern. "All the goals were really nice goals."
Demko had a comment on the match when she was told about the result.
"This is a great start to our spring schedule, "declared Kern. "The players have worked tirelessly since mid-January on their conditioning, speed, agilities and our team shape on the field. This win was a direct result of their hard work and commitment to pushing this program forward. They are deserving of this win for each other and this program. More importantly, this kind of result happens when we hold each other accountable on a daily basis."
