ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Kaitlyn Eckert set a school record with a point in her 10th straight game as UNC Asheville downed USC Upstate 2-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs stayed unbeaten on the young season and are 2-0 for the first time since the 2005 campaign. The Spartans fell to 1-1-1 on the year.

Eckert scored Asheville’s second goal of the game and that broke the school record for a point in consecutive games. She shared the record with former Bulldog great Hilary McKay who set the mark in the 2005 season.

Asheville scored both of its goals within a two-minute span of the first half. Amanda Knapp scored her first goal of the season off a feed from Amanda Dailor at the 34:46 mark. Kelsey Palmer was also credited with an assist on the play.

Eckert scored her first goal of the season in her first game playing after missing the first game of the year due to an injury. She took a pass from Kennedy Garrett to push the lead to 2-0 at 36:22.

That was more than enough for the Bulldogs. The Spartans controlled play for much of the season half as they out-shot the home team 7-2. But Asheville goalkeepers Heather Muller and Suzie Zigante combined for five saves to earn the shutout.

UNC Asheville is back in action this Sunday afternoon when the Bulldogs travel to Wofford for a 1 p.m. battle. The match with the Terriers begins a three-game road swing for Asheville.
