ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville scored twice in the second half as the Bulldogs rallied past Francis Marion and picked up their first win of the season by a 2-1 score Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Asheville (1-6-0) trailed 1-0 at halftime but dominated most of the second half. The Bulldogs struck twice in a five-minute stretch on goals from Mary Beale and Dana Sroka. The Patriots (2-8-1) controlled the final 10 minutes, but Asheville goalkeeper Megan Dent made three saves in the final five minutes to allow the Bulldogs to hold on for the victory.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Asheville controlled play and had most of the possession to start the second half. The Bulldogs were awarded a corner kick in the 61st minute. Junior Leilani Halkiotis sent a ball to the goal area that Beale was able to get a foot on and the ball snuck into the back of the net. It was the junior midfielder's first career goal and it knotted the match at 1-1 at 61:28. Halkiotis earned an assist on the play.
Sroka gave Asheville the lead for good five minutes later. The senior forward was able to corral a loose ball from 14 yards out. She hit a floating shot that simply went over the outstretched hands of FMU goalkeeper Casey Durham for a 2-1 Bulldog lead at 66:35. It was Sroka's first goal of the season.
The Patriots had some opportunities in the final 10 minutes as Teri Kourtis had two shots from close in the box that was stopped by Dent. The sophomore goalkeeper made six saves on the day.
The Bulldogs had control of part of the first half but could not get the ball into the goal. Francis Marion got on the board first on a counter as Kourtis send a perfect pass to Kiley Williams. Williams hit a shot form 10 yards out for a 1-0 Patriot lead at 25:30. It was her second goal of the season.
Asheville out-shot Francis Marion, 13-10. Each team had seven shots in the second half half. The Bulldogs had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks with all of their corners coming in the second stanza.
Asheville is off next week and will be home again on Sunday, Sept. 26 when the Bulldogs welcome South Carolina State to Greenwood Field for a 2 p.m. match.
