ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team opens Big South Conference play this weekend with a pair of home matches. The Bulldogs host Radford Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m., followed by a match with VMI on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.uncabulldogs.com.
Asheville (1-7-0) has suffered through a tough non-conference schedule. The Bulldogs have had to battle through a lot of injuries that has limited their options. Despite all the adversity, first-year coach Michelle Demko's club has fought hard and showed improvement with each match. Asheville's only win came on Sept. 19 when the Bulldogs rallied past Francis Marion, 2-1 with two goals in the second half.
Asheville played last on Monday when it fell at South Carolina State, 3-1. The game was originally scheduled to be at Greenwood Field on Sunday but heavy rain forced the match to Orangeburg. Hannah Jeske scored for the Bulldogs.
Radford brings a 6-4-0 worksheet into Greenwood Field for Friday's match. The Highlanders have won their last four matches against the Bulldogs.
NOTES - Radford leads the all-time series between the teams 13-6-2...Asheville last won 2-0 in the 2006 season at Greenwood Field...the Bulldogs have only been shutout twice this year and have scored at least one goal in four straight matches...junior midfielder Leilani Halkiotis leads Asheville in points with six as she's scored two goals and added two assists...the Bulldogs have eight goals on the year with seven different players scoring a goal.
