ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Radford scored a goal in each half as the Highlanders slipped past UNC Asheville 2-0 in the Big South Conference opening game for both teams at Greenwood Field Friday afternoon.

The Highlanders (7-4-0, 1-0-0 BSC) got a goal from Julie Ruh'e in the 34th minute and a goal from Mary Wiley in the 53rd minute to win their third straight match. RU goalkeeper Che' Brown stopped five Asheville shots and had an assist on the Highlanders' second goal.

The Bulldogs (1-8-0, 0-1-0 BSC) were a bit unlucky on the day as they hit the goal post and the cross bar in the first half. Asheville had two point-blank shots late in the first half, but Brown was able to stop each shot.

The visitors held a slight edge in shots, 12-10 but doubled the home team in corner kicks, 10-5. Using a strong wind in the second half, RU held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Asheville controlled play early in the match and had a great opportunity when Amanda Knapp's shot hit the cross bar in the first minute.

RU got on the board when Sydney Golden sent a long pass to Ruh'e who got loose for a breakaway. She scored her sixth goal of the year on a shot from 10 yards out at the 34:41 mark to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs nearly tied the match late in the opening half. Using two corner kicks, both Emma Sell-Goodhand and Ferris Roberts hit shots from close range that Brown stopped.

In the second half against the run of play, Brown sent a long pass to Maryellen Derenda who hit Wiley for a breakaway. She connected from seven yards out into the left-hand corner of the net for a 2-0 RU lead at 53:32.

Asheville came close again five minutes later when leading scorer Leilani Halkiotis took a shot from 15 yards out that was headed to the top half of the goal when Brown just knocked it away at the last minute.

The Bulldogs are back in Big South play on Sunday when they host VMI at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m. Radford travels to league foe Presbyterian College Sunday at 1 p.m.
