ASHEVILLE, N.C. - VMI got goals from three different players as the Keydets off a determined UNC Asheville comeback to record a 3-2 Big South Conference women's soccer win over the Bulldogs on a cold and windy day at Greenwood Field Sunday afternoon.

VMI (2-10-0, 1-1-0 BSC) led 2-0 at halftime and 3-1 in the second half as Asheville stormed back and just missed tying the game on several occasions. Amanda Knapp scored her first career goal for the Bulldogs and added an assist.

The Keydets picked up goals from Sarah Strand, Christina Gontarski and Amanda Berriors.

VMI had the wind in the first half and took advantage with a goal early and late in the period to take a 2-0 lead at intermission.

The Keydets got on the board at 9:27 when Simone Jimenez sent a pass to Strand who tucked the ball into back of the net for a 1-0 VMI lead. It was her second goal of the season.

The Bulldogs began to control play after the VMI goal and just missed tying the match when Mary Beale's shot from 10 yards out was knocked away by a Keydet defender.

The Keydets picked up their second goal when a loose ball floated out to Gontarski. She hit a shot from 10 yards that went into the goal for a 2-0 VMI lead at 42:13.

Asheville controlled much of the second half and finally got on the board when Knapp received a pass from Leilani Halkiotis in front of the goal. She then tapped the ball past VMI goalkeeper Heidi Beemer to narrow the lead to 2-1 at 59:43.

Against the run of play, Berrios would score the game-winner. She dribbled 20 yards down the field, connected from eight yards out at 64:20 to push the margin to 3-1.

The Bulldogs came right back two minutes later when Knapp connected with Beale. Beale scored her second goal of the year on a shot five yards away to narrow the lead to 3-2 at 66:41.

Asheville pummeled the VMI goal for the rest of the game but Beemer made three saves in the final 20 minutes to hold the Bulldogs off. Asheville just missed on a header with 10 minutes left that went wide.

The Bulldogs out-shot VMI for the game, 17-10 and 12-5 in the second half.

Asheville plays next at Presbyterian College Friday night at 7 p.m. The Keydets host Coastal Carolina Friday at 4 p.m.
