October 24, 2010
The Runnin’ Bulldogs scored a goal in the first half and two in the second to pick up the victory to improve to 6-8-3 on the season overall with a 3-3-1 mark in the Big South. An injury depleted Asheville squad battled through the entire 90 minutes but could not overcome the three-goal deficit as the Bulldogs drop to 1-14-0 overall and 0-7-0 in conference play.
Gardner-Webb recorded 15 shots on the day with 12 of those being on goal while holding Asheville to seven total shots and only three on goal. Goalkeepers Chelsea Hearne and Erika Lenns combined for the shutout of Asheville, with Hearne picking up the victory to improve to 6-5-3 on the season.
The Blue & White’s Kristen Lawson got the start in goal for the Bulldogs and recorded nine saves on the day. Midfielder Leilani Halkiostis posted three of Asheville’s shots, with Mary Beale contributing two off the bench.
GWU’s Megan Tremblay broke the scoreless tie at the 2:11 mark in the first half, scoring on a break away through the middle of Asheville’s back line on a through ball by teammate Meagan Reynolds. Neither team would be able to add a goal the rest of the half as the Runnin’ Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Sarah Keyser would add to Gardner-Webb’s lead 10 minutes into the second half when she scored from inside the six on a deflected clearance by Asheville off of a corner kick. Ele Margelos posted another goal for the Runnin’ Bulldogs a little over a minute later when she took the ball on a break away up the left side and then beat Lawson one on one to put GWU by three.
Asheville will close out the season with two road games next week, taking on Liberty on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. and then High Point on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
