ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Amanda Knapp scored twice and added an assist as UNC Asheville blasted Charleston Southern 5-0 in Big South Conference women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game to lead 2-0 and added three goals in the second half to record their first win over the Buccaneers (7-7-0, 2-4-0 BSC) at Greenwood Field since the 2003 season.
Leilani Halkiotis added two goals for Asheville. The Bulldogs improved their record to 4-11-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play.
"We really played very well today from start to finish," commented Asheville coach Michelle Demko. "This is a big win for our program against a good Charleston Southern team."
Asheville opened the scoring in the first minute of play. Amanda Dailor sent a pass to Knapp that sprung the sophomore forward on a breakaway. She scored from five yards to give the home team a 1-0 lead at the 1:01 mark of the game.
The Bulldogs struck again in the 10th minute. Knapp made a perfect cross to Halkiotis in the box. The senior midfielder headed into the far right corner for a 2-0 Asheville lead at 10:16.
The scored stayed 2-0 the rest of the half. CSU began to get its offense going and fired eight shots on the Bulldog goal. Toni Lashley had two shots in the opening half, and Asheville goalkeeper Heather Muller made a nice save on a shot from Lashley late in the half.
The Bulldogs padded the lead and sealed the game midway through the second half. Ferriss Roberts scored her third goal of the year when she took a shot that hit the cross bar. She gathered the rebound and scored to make it 3-0 at 62:46.
Five minutes later, Mary Kate Tucker sent a pass to Knapp who tallied her second goal of the game on a breakawy to push the lead to 4-0 at the 67:29 mark.
Halkiotis added her second goal of the game at 79:43. She scored an unassisted goal on a blast from 40 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
Asheville held an 18-12 advantage in shots as each team had three corner kicks. Muller earned her second shutout of the season for Asheville with seven saves. CSU goalkeeper Amy Arroyo made five saves for the Lady Bucs.
The Bulldogs play next on the road at Gardner-Webb Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Charleston Southern heads to Coastal Carolina Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
