WE HAVE A ROSTER FOLKS!!!
I sit in my hotel and write one last blog before heading back to the city and the campus I adore. Over the course of 14 days, I had the great pleasure of watching 30 players come together and compete for 20 spots on the U20-World Cup qualifying roster. Each day was a test for them. It was not easy but these elite players competed and made life, for the staff, difficult in the selection process. The days were long, and demanding, but you never heard a complaint from any player. If you want to achieve a goal, you find a way through the struggles and embrace the opportunity as a whole.
We played two 60-minute games again so we could have one last look at every player before narrowing the roster to 20 players. It was exciting to watch them in their element, having the freedom to be creative, helping each other solve problems collectively and how, for these 30 players, this game was bigger than any result after the final whistle. We won both games, but for the staff, the success was having a 14-day camp and watching the team continue to get better. The 20 players on this World Cup qualifying roster are extremely talented and I believe they can win the world cup.
It has been an honor to help coach this U20 national team for the past two weeks. I will take what I learned and bring it back to Asheville and our women's soccer program. I am looking forward to being back on campus and seeing everyone soon.
