BOILING-SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb scored twice in the second half as the Runnin’ Bulldogs rallied for a 2-1 Big South Conference women’s soccer win over UNC Asheville Tuesday night in the final match of the 2013 season.
Asheville (6-11-2, 2-7-2 Big South) held a one goal lead for just over 40 minutes in the match after Shenny Lehhart scored her third goal of the season after GWU's defense misplayed a ball in the defensive third. Lehhart received a pass from Megan Foster, and then pounded a shot from the center of the pitch that hit the left post and bounced in, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute of play.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs would rally in the second half. Bradi Alley scored the tying goal early in the half to knot the match at 1-1.
GWU took the lead, 2-1 in the 65th minute when senior Karyn LaTorre scored off a feed from Meagan Reynolds.
Asheville pressed for the tying goal, and Lenhart almost delivered in the 89th minute. Off a free kick, Lenhart got the ball in the goal area and fired a shot five yards from the net. GWU goalkeeper Amy Schmidt made a great save with just seconds remaining in the match.
The Bulldogs finish the year with an overall record of 6-11-2. The six victories are the most for the Asheville program since the 2006 season.
