ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Dominique Brown scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute as homestanding South Carolina State slipped past UNC Asheville 1-0 in Dawson Stadium Tuesday night.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Asheville (4-4). South Carolina State improved to 4-6-1 on the season.
"This is a tough loss tonight. We were far better in every component of statistics but unfortunately the only one that counts is how many goals you score,” stated Bulldog coach Michelle Demko. “We created chances but have to be better in putting them away.
“We played most of the game with eight freshmen and sophomores on the field, which is exciting for our current success and our growth to come,” added Demko. “We have faced some real adversity with the loss of some starters but I have much respect for the way this team has come together and decided to head toward the challenge instead of running from it."
Asheville goalkeeper Heather Muller made seven saves for the Bulldogs. Amanda Knapp had four shots for the visitors.
Despite the loss, Asheville is off to its best start since the 2006 season. The Bulldogs open Big South Conference play against Campbell on Wednesday, Sept. 25th at Greenwood Field starting at 3:30 p.m.
