LEXINGTON, Va. – Kennedy Garrett scored the game’s only goal, and goalkeeper Heather Muller made a big save with 25 seconds left as UNC Asheville edged VMI 1-0 in Big South Conference women’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The win (6-9-2, 2-5-2 BSC) snapped a seven-game winless streak for the Bulldogs and kept their hopes alive to get a berth in the Big South Conference Tournament. Asheville has eight points and is in ninth place in the league standings, one point behind Charleston Southern. The top eight teams go to the tournament.

Wednesday’s game was close throughout with each team having good chance. The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the 59th minute.

Amanda Knapp sent a perfect pass to Garrett who went one-and-one with the VMI goalkeeper. She scored her fourth goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 59:12.

VMI tried to get the equalizer late. Myranda Emery looks like she had a shot from six yards out that would sneak in the back of the net. But Muller made a diving stop with 25 seconds left to preserve her fifth shutout of the season.

The junior goalkeeper made three saves in the win.

UNC Asheville plays its final home game of the season against Longwood Saturday at 2 p.m. The match will be Senior Day and will also be the team’s Pink Game.  The Bulldogs plan to honor seniors’ Kristen Lawson and Amanda Knapp prior to the match.
