ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s soccer team plays its final home game of the 2013 season on Saturday when the Bulldogs host Longwood in a key Big South Conference battle at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m.

Asheville (6-9-1, 2-5-2 BSC) picked up a key league win in its last match when the Bulldogs slipped past VMI on the road Wednesday afternoon, 1-0. Kennedy Garrett scored the game-winner early in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Heather Muller made a diving save with 25 seconds left to preserve the victory.

The Blue & White need to keep winning as Asheville is battling to get into the Big South Conference Championship. The top eight teams get into the tourney. Michelle Demko’s club is sitting in ninth place with eight points, one point behind Charleston Southern’s nine points. Each team has two matches left.

"Saturday is an opportunity for us to gain more points in conference play,” stated Demko. “We are on the cusp, so every opportunity and every point now becomes critical.”

Asheville faces a stern test against Longwood. The Lancers are 8-7-2 on the season and 7-2-0 in league play and stand in third place in the league standings with 14 points.

Prior to the match, the Asheville will honor its two seniors – Kristen Lawson and Amanda Knapp – as the duo play their final home match at Greenwood Field.

“We love playing at home in front of our friends and family so are hopeful that atmosphere will give us extra energy,” added Demko. “I expect the game to be full of emotion as we honor our two seniors, Kristin Lawson and Amanda Knapp.

“It's also our breast cancer awareness game so there are many emotional themes for the day. Our challenge is to play through those emotions and understand the number one priority is to win the game and take away as many points as possible,” Demko also said. “Longwood is a good program. You will see both teams play a similar possession style on the day. It should be a good match up and exciting 90 minutes."

Garrett leads Asheville in scoring with four goals and 10 points. The Bulldogs’ six wins this year are the most for the program since winning 10 in the 2006 season.
