Women' Soccer Falls at Coastal Carolina, 4-1

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina struck for four goals in the second half to rally past visiting UNC Asheville 4-1 in Big South Conference women's soccer action Monday afternoon at CCU Soccer Stadium.

The Bulldogs (1-12-0, 0-5-0 BSC) stunned the homestanding Chanticleers early in the match. Francis Staelin sent a pass to Ferriss Roberts who hit a shot from 22 yards out that bounced off the far post and into the net for her second goal of the season. The goal came at 8:46.

CCU controlled much of the first half after the goal but the Asheville defense was able to keep the lead. Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Lawson made four saves to help the Bulldogs take a 1-0 lead at intermission. The Chanticleers out-shot Asheville 8-3 in the opening half.

Coastal Carolina (8-7-1, 4-2-0 BSC) finally broke through midway in the second half with three goals in a five-minute span. Katie Wahl tied the game on a breakaway in the 58th minute to make it 1-1. Three minutes later, Christina Stern scored the game-winner to gave CCU a 2-1 lead. Julia Baldwin scored in the 63rd minute to push the margin to 3-1.

Kate Wilkinson sealed the home team win with a goal in the 82nd minute give the Chanticleers a 4-1 lead.

CUU finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots. They also had eight corner kicks to five for the Bulldogs.

Asheville returns home this weekend for its final two home matches of the season. The Bulldogs entertain Big South foe Winthrop Friday at 3:30 p.m. and then play Gardner-Webb on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be video-streamed and can be seen at www.uncabulldogs.com.
