ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team finishes up the regular season on Saturday at home when the Bulldogs host Big South Conference foe Liberty starting at Noon. Admission is free.
Saturday's game is a huge one for Asheville (4-14-0, 3-6-0 BSC) as the Bulldogs are clinging to the eighth and final spot for next week's Big South Conference Tournament. Michelle Demko's club needs a victory over the Flames to assure a spot in the tournament in Charleston, S.C. next weekend. The Bulldogs (3-6-0) are just in front of ninth-place Coastal Carolina (2-6-1). The Chanticleers host Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Asheville could also get into the tournament with a Coastal Carolina loss. However, if the Bulldogs were to tie or lose to Liberty then the Chanticleers would get the last spot over Asheville by virtue of a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs a few weeks ago.
Demko's club hopes to end a three-game losing streak on Saturday. Asheville lost to High Point at home on Thursday, 4-0.
Liberty is 7-7-3 on the season and 4-4-1 in Big South Conference play. The Lady Flames are tied for fifth with Charleston Southern in the league standings and need a win to stay in fifth place.
Prior to the match, the Bulldogs will honor seniors playing in their final home match at Greenwood Field. The honorees include defender Carolyn O' Brien, forward Emma Sell-Goodhand, midfielder Leilani Halkiotis, defender Mary Kate Tucker and defender Frances Staelin. In addition, Dana Sroka from last year's team will be honored.
