CHULA VISTA, Calif. - UNC Asheville women's soccer Michelle Demko has been selected to help train the U.S. Under-20 Women's National team as they begin preparations for the qualifying for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup from Jan. 5-19.
"I am grateful for another opportunity to go back into a youth national team camp," stated Demko. "This is a World Cup year for the U20's which makes the environment that more exciting. What an incredible opportunity for my professional development to be surrounded by high-quality coaches, players and training staff while in San Diego. To be part of the process is an honor. I am looking forward to it."
Coach Demko has agreed to provide a blog throughout her time in Southern California. Today is the first installment:
Hello from San Diego! It is early here, 6:30 a.m. to be exact, the time difference has me up ready to greet the day and this opportunity for these incredible players. It is day 3, just getting started in this 14 day camp, but things look great on the field. The first couple of days have been spent with some testing, review of principles of play and just getting the players feet out from under them with traveling to San Diego. We will see our first test Thursday, as we will play our first of two games against a team from Shanghai.
We are staying in a hotel located in San Diego. Normally we would stay at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, but since this is an Olympic year, all dorms are full. This means we travel 30 minutes to and from training and because San Diego traffic is so unpredictable, once we leave the hotel for our morning session, we stay at the OTC for the remainder of the day and drive back after dinner. There is an athlete lounge so the players usually wander there, but the staff stays in the cafeteria and talk about the session we just had and plan for the next session. There is an incredible exchange of ideas, the kind of dialogue that excites me to be here, but also get back to Asheville and apply this knowledge to the Bulldogs!!!
I miss the mountains, and the city I adore, Asheville, but for now San Diego, and this hotel, are home as we try and select a roster for U20 World Cup qualification games in February. I am beyond excited to be here and help in this process. I will write more in a few days. GO BULLDOGS!"
