CHARLOTTE - Freshman midfielder Shenny Lenhart stunned Charlotte with an early goal, but the 49ers scored the next three to defeat UNC Asheville 3-1 in exhibition women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs had several key players not playing in Saturday's contest but still gave the 49ers a battle.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Muller was magnificent in goal for Asheville. She stopped 12 Charlotte shots on the day. The 49ers outshot the Bulldogs, 24-10.
Lenhart made her college debut a memorable one as she scored an unassisted goal at 2:56 of the first period. The teams played three 30-minute halves.
Asheville led 1-0 until Carrie Dail tied the game at 19:52 for the 49ers at 1-1. Dail scored two minutes later to give Charlotte at 2-1 lead.
Sara Trexler scored in the 31st minute to push the lead to 3-1.
Asheville had three different players with two shots each as Amanda Dailor, Amanda Knapp and Lenhart all had two shots for the visitors.
The Bulldogs open the regular season at Eastern Kentucky Friday at 5 p.m. Asheville's first home match takes places on Sunday, Aug. 19 when the Blue & White entertain East Tennessee State at 1 p.m.
