ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Julie Holz scored twice and added an assist as Appalachian State held off UNC Asheville 4-2 in non-conference women's soccer action Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field.


The Bulldogs (2-6-0) picked up goals from Amanda Knapp and Shenny Lenhart but the Apps broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half with two quick goals that Asheville could not come back from.


Knapp stunned the Mountaineers with a goal in the 7th minute to give Asheville a quick 1-0 lead. Off a free kick, Ferriss Roberts sent a long pass to Knapp. The junior forward headed the ball into the back of the net.


ASU (3-4-0) quickly came back. Off another free kick, Holz sent a pass to Jenna Caudle who scored on a breakaway to knot the match at 1-1 at 11:07.


The first half ended in a 1-1 tie with each team having six shots apiece.


The visitors came out strong early in the second half and scored two quick goals to take the lead for good at 3-1.


The first came at 49:40 when Caudle sent a pass to Meggie Grraham who tallied her first goal of the season to push ASU in front 2-1.


Ten minutes later, Holz scored when she knocked in a ball from six yards out for a 3-1 Mountaineer lead.


The Bulldogs controlled possession for the next 20 minutes and finally broke through for a goal. Paige Trent sent a pass to Lenhart who scored her third goal of the season at 82:36 to cut the lead to 3-2.


Asheville continued to press for the equalizer but ASU sealed the win when Holz scored off a pass from Caudle at 87:35 to push the lead to 4-2.


UNC Asheville opens Big South Conference play this Thursday evening at Longwood starting at 7 p.m.
