ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Paige Trent's goal late in the first overtime period gave UNC Asheville a dramatic 3-2 Big South Conference victory over Gardner-Webb Thursday afternoon at Greenwood Field.


The Bulldogs (4-13-0, 2-7-0 BSC) trailed 2-1 late in regulation but Kaitlyn Eckert's goal with 28 seconds left in regulation tied the match and sent the game into overtime.


Asheville's overtime victory snapped a five-game losing streak. The Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 3-12-1 on the year and 2-6-1 in league play.


With the match tied at 2-2, the Bulldogs made a run up the field toward the Gardner-Webb goal. Freshman Kristen Phelps flicked a pass to Trent. The freshman forward headed the ball into the far left corner of the net give Asheville the overtime victory at 98:15.


The Bulldogs controlled most of the match as they out-shot the visitors, 30-13. But Gardner-Webb shook off a 1-0 Asheville halftime lead with two quick goals to start the second half and led 2-1 until the final seconds of regulation.


Trailing 2-1, the visitors were called for a foul about 20 yards away from the goal. Eckert calmly struck a perfect ball into the right-side of the net to knot the game at 2-2. It was the sophomore forward's team-leading ninth goal of the season.


The Runnin' Bulldogs had picked up the lead quickly in the second half.  Nichole Poppe took a pass and scored at 50:02 to tie the match at 1-1.


Seven minutes later, GWU's leading scorer Shelby Hooe tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a feed from Megan Loftin at 57:36.


The Bulldogs took the lead early in the match when freshman Bria West scored her second goal of the year at 10:44 to put Asheville in front, 1-0. The home team out-shot the visitors, 11-6 in the opening half.


Eckert led the shot barrage for the Bulldogs with nine shots. Trent added four shots.


GWU goalkeeper Amy Schmitt played well for the Runnin' Bulldogs and finished with nine saves. Heather Muller had eight for Asheville.


UNC Asheville celebrates Senior Day on Saturday when the Bulldogs welcome league foe Winthrop to Greenwood Field in a match that starts at 2:30 p.m. Gardner-Webb travels to Presbyterian College for a 7 p.m. league contest.
