ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s soccer team returns to the road on Thursday when the Bulldogs travel to Appalachian State for a non-conference tilt with the Mountaineers at ASU Soccer Stadium.

Asheville (2-1) will play the second of its three-game road trip in Boone tomorrow night. The Bulldogs lost a tough 1-0 decision to Wofford on Sunday.  Michelle Demko’s team completes the road swing at Chattanooga on Sunday (Sept. 8) before returning home to face Mars Hill next Wednesday (Sept. 11).

“We are hitting the road again with App State on Thursday,” stated Demko. “We match up well, as we have very similar attacking styles.  It will be a game for our lines to stay connected, especially in transition.  Our focus is to minimize the space between our backs and forwards, so we are more difficult to break down defensively but also give us more options when we have the ball.”

The Bulldogs and Apps played last year at Greenwood Field with ASU winning, 4-2. The Mountaineers have won the last five matches between the teams. Asheville’s last win in the series came in the 2006 season when the Bulldogs edged the Apps 2-1 at Greenwood Field.

The Apps are 2-2-0 on the season as they knocked off Southern Utah, 2-1 on Sunday in a tournament in Colorado.

Asheville has been playing much better on defense this season. The Bulldogs have given up two goals on the year. Last year, Asheville gave up 11 goals in the first three matches of the year.

The Bulldogs have scored four goals on the year from four different players. Junior Amanda Dailor leads Asheville in scoring with a goal and an assist for three points. Kennedy Garrett had two assists on the young season. Junior goalkeeper Heather Muller has a 0.71 goals-against –average. She’s posted 19 saves on the year to give her a career total of 264 saves. Muller needs just four saves to move into third place on the school’s career list and move past Veronica Lazar (267).

BULLDOG NOTES

UNC Asheville was shutout for the first time in 13 games on Sunday at Wofford.

The Bulldogs have been out-shot in each of their first three games of the year.

Junior forward Kaitlyn Eckert has had at least a point in 10 of her last 11 games played.

Asheville has won four of its last six games dating back to last season.

The Bulldogs have not won in Boone since the 1997 season when Asheville edged the Apps, 2-1 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Asheville is 0-7-1 in Boone since that match. The Bulldogs tied ASU 0-0 in 1999 and have lost the last seven times they have played here.
