Editor’s Note: Junior goalkeeper Suzie Zigante has been selected to play for the Croatian National Team when they participate in the Balaton Cup Women's International Tournament in Hungary in early August. She will send a blog periodically to tell of her experience playing for her national team. Today's blog talks about Suzie making her first appearance in goal against Hungary yesterday.
So I didn't get to post yesterday because we were traveling so late...and instead of blogging I may or may not have Skyped Brianna for three hours (shout out best friend!!).
So here is how the game went. We lost 3-1. Oh my goodness it was hard. I started, warmed up great, and wasn't even nervous anymore. Then the second minute I was in they had a breakaway, I came out to save it, did so but it wasn't one you could hold onto and it rebounded, the girl passed it quickly to the middle I shifted to the middle and set to save it but the Hungarian girl just picked a corner and scored. In the second minute.. What?
So that happened. We did not have the starting 11 in as our coach put in the other players, and two of them were defenders on the outsides. And I am not going to lie to you, I was a little lost in the goal this game. I didn't know what they wanted of me. To be far out? To be pushed back? I had no idea, and I had no idea how anyone played. I think the defenders on the outside felt the same too, so it was a little bit of trouble in the back. I couldn't speak to them either because of the language barrier. It was such a weird game for me in that aspect. I found out after the game they wanted me to play much higher out that I was used too. I wish I knew this before and I would have done so! I mean I wasn't on my line or anything but hey. The second goal which I thinks it was actually my fault was a cross on the flank to the middle which was unmarked and headed in. I was standing on my near post, and I should have been a little more in the center. I had another breakaway in which I may have accidentally cleated a girl in a not so great spot... I didn't mean to I promise!! The ball was bouncing right about at the 18 or 17 and the Hungarian girl was getting ready to shoot, and I came out hard and dove on the ball but she tried to volley at the same time making her fall onto my cleat. She was out the whole game. I felt so bad, but it was the best save I had. My kicks were really good going to the half way spot or beyond. And then the third goal occurred, a breakaway from the flank coming into the middle, I came out and set but she finished it far post side netting.
You know at first after the game. I thought I did really bad. Like never get invited back again bad, because there were so many goals so quickly. But now actually taking time to think about the game and then write about it, there really wasn't much I could do. I did everything I was supposed to and considering the starting 11 were not in and were figuring the system out like me it wasn't that bad at all. And if I am lucky enough to get invited back, I can understand how we play better and be more successful. I think I didn't do anything spectacular, but I didn't do anything wrong either. Luckily I am training with the Croatian keeper coach for the next few days, so he can see me play as well. You know only time can tell what happens next, but I know I was capable for the level I was playing and will be even better the next time around.
In other news, my roommate and I, in our last night in Hungary had nightmares. She had a dream that her cousin died, and I had a dream I had Ebola. Who dreams this? What’s wrong with me? My roommate woke up almost crying and when I woke up I felt like I had a fever. In my dream I apparently got it in the airplane and they had to quarantine me in some remote island in Africa or something along with the rest of the plane. I'm sure I am super popular with everyone in my dreams.
OK well, I am training with the keeper coach today at 5 and then going to watch Dinamo play a Champions league game here in Zagreb. My father played with them when he was pro. I'll let ya know how that goes.
We went to Budapest a few days and here’s some photos from our tour of that city.
