ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's indoor track and field squads leave today to compete in the 2012 Big South Conference Championships at Virginia Tech. The competition takes place on Friday and Saturday.
Both teams have enjoyed some good moments throughout the season. On the men's side, sophomore sprinter Milan Ristic will be one of the favorites in the 60-meter hurdles. He has earned honors for his work this year from the Big South Conference twice this season. Ristic has also set school records in the 200 meters during the year.
On the women's side, Emma Bussard had enjoyed a great year in the 3000 meters. She's been named Big South Runner of the Week once during the season. Sarah Gentry has also been strong in the 800 meters throughout the year.
The Bulldog men's squad hopes to improve on last year's eighth place finish, while the women stunned the league last year with a third-place finish.
"We hope to finish higher this year on the men's side," explained Asheville coach Jesse Norman. "We'd like to repeat what we did last year with our women but that won't be easy as a lot of things fell into place. However, we're going to do as good as we can."
Norman likes the year both teams have had in 2012.
"We've had some real consistency throughout the season on both teams," stated Norman. "You always want to do better but we've been having solid results across the board in sprint, distance and field events. Both programs are making progress."
