CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened the season on Friday at the 49ers Classic at the campus of UNC Charlotte.


Emma Bussard finished in third place in the 5000 meters highlighting the Bulldogs performance on Friday. She red-shirted in the indoor season but came on strong on Friday as she posted a time of 17:12.68 to take third in the event.


Asheville also had Melanie Kulesz come in ninth in the 5000 at a time of 17:51, while Erin Dalton took 14th at 18:08.


On the men's side, Kurt Hibert took third place in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 56.33 meters. Hibert finished first among all college representatives. He held the previous school record of 54.47.


Sarah Gentry took ninth place in 1500 meters as she posted a time of 4:40.58.


David Ryland finished seventh in the 3000 meter steeplechase at a time of 10:05. Ryan Catrine came in ninth in the event at 10:19.


Both teams will be back in action Saturday morning for the final day of the 49ers Classic.
