ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville head track and field coach Jesse Norman has announced the signing of six incoming freshmen to national letters-of-intent.
Norman and his staff inked two men and four women as part of their recruiting class. Here is a look at each signee.
Heading up the men’s signees is distance runner Dominic Collichio from Carrboro HS in Carrboro. His personal best in the 1600 is 4:22.31, in the 3200 it’s 9:29.89 and in the 5K it’s 16:26.61.
“Dom comes to us from Carrboro where he developed into one of the top 2-A runners in the state this past spring,” stated Norman. “He saw a significant drop in his performances, and we are excited about him joining the Bulldogs next year. I believe he is someone who could come in and be an impact athlete for us right from the start.”
Caleb Smith is Asheville’s other men’s signee. The distance runner comes to the Bulldog program from Patrick County Hs in Stuart, Va. His personal best in the 1600 is 4:26.81, 9:33.03 in the 3200 and 15:56 in the 5K.
“Caleb was a standout at Patrick County HS,” declared Norman. “He is someone who will help to add depth to our men’s distance program and be able to challenge for a top-five spot this fall in cross country.”
The women’s signees are headed up by Amy Castle from St. Clairsville HS in Barnesville, Ohio. She is a distance runner. Her top time in the 800 is 2:22.64, in the 1600 is 5:08.31, in the 3200 is 11:17.12 and in the 5K is 18:45.80.
“Amy will join current Bulldog Andy Thornburg as teammates this year,” stated Norman. “This is the first top Ohio recruit we’ve been able to sign. Amy has had performances that can lead her to being a standout distance performer in the Big South Conference and nationally.”
Argia Gibson is a sprinter and jumper from Lake Norman HS in Mooresville. Her top times in sprint events are 12.64 (100), 25.65 (200) and 58.54 (400). In the long jump, Gibson’s personal best is 17-10 and in the triple jump is 36-3.
“Argia rejoins former high school teammate Kelsie Rubino this year,” commented Norman. “She is someone who has a very high ceiling and could be our next big Bulldog student-athlete. Argia has only competed in track and field for two years so she is still quite young in her development. We are excited about working with her and see what events she will be able to help UNC Asheville in the future.”
Another North Carolina product, Katie Gamble, will join the Bulldog program in the fall. She’s a distance runner who prepped at Millbrook HS in Raleigh. Her top times are 5:19.50 (1600), 11:55.10 (3200) and 19:32.31 (5K).
Rounding out Asheville’s signees is distance runner Sarah Heisner from Creekside HS in Saint Johns, Fla. Her top times are 2:21 (800), 5:09 (1600), 11:37.90 (3200) and 18:49 (5K).
“Sarah moved to Florida from California, so she has seen high-level competition her entire high school career and that should help her transition to collegiate competition,” commented Norman. “We’re excited to have her join the Bulldog program, and we believe she can be a standout student-athlete in the Big South Conference and nationally.”
