ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field squads will be in action this weekend at the Duke Invitational which will take place at Wallace Wade Stadium. The meet begins Friday morning and continues all day on Saturday.
Both teams are coming off impressive performances two weeks ago at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic.
"I really like the way both of our teams keep improving," stated Asheville coach Jesse Norman. "We had a good meet at Western Carolina two weeks ago and hope to build on that this weekend."
Norman admits that the competition will be steep at Duke.
"This is one of the best meets in the county and we're going to see some great athletes perform at Duke," commented Norman. "We're anxious to see how we measure up to some of those teams and athletes."
The Bulldog women's squad will be led by senior sprinter Natalie Pearson. She'll be entered in both the 100 and 200-meter dash. Pearson has finished in first place in all five races she has entered this season.
On the men's side, Simon Haake plans to throw in both the javelin and hammer throw. He won the javelin at Charlotte last month by close to 10 meters.
Other Bulldogs to watch for this weekend will be sophomore distance runner Melanie Kulesz in the 800 and 1500 meters. Junior Emma Bussard will participate in the 1500 meters and Steeplechase.
Freshman sprinter Milan Ristic has enjoyed a great rookie season. He'll compete in the 200 meters and the 110 hurdles.
