BLOOMINGTON, IND. - UNC Asheville's two representatives from the track and field program competed at the NCAA Round Division I East Preliminary Round meet on Thursday at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of the University of Indiana. Both Simon Haake and Natalie Pearson gave good performances in their events but just missed advancing in each event.
Haake competed in the javelin and ended up finishing in 21st place. He had three throws on the day with his best toss being his first one at 64.11 meters. Haake's second throw was 62.36 meters and his final toss was 62.39 meters. He fell just four meters shy of qualifying for the NCAA National Meet in two weeks.
"Simon had a good day and threw well but the East region is loaded with good javelin throwers," stated Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. "He beat out a lot of talented competitors just to finish in 21st place. We're proud of Simon and what he accomplished this year and in his career."
Pearson just missed qualifying for Friday's semifinals in the 100 meters by .05 seconds and three places. She ran the 100 in a time of 11.79.
"Natalie ran extremely well but like Simon she's ran into some incredible competition in the 100 meters," commented Norman. "She ran a great race and just missed making the semifinals. Hopefully, Natalie will have a little better luck in the 200 meters tomorrow."
The senior sprinter will run in the 200 meters preliminaries on Friday at approximately 7:30 p.m.
