ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville head women’s track and field coach Jesse Norman has announced seven additions to his 2012-13 recruiting class, adding four instate and three out-of-state signees to the Bulldogs’ program.

“This women’s class has got the coaching staff very excited about the potential of the women’s team this upcoming year,” said Norman. “The addition of these individuals with the graduation of one scoring individual, Emily Pineda, this past year leads us to believe we have the makings of a good team within the Big South Conference and the region.”

Lauren Barnes – Heritage High School:  Walland, TN

PR’s:  1600m – 5:21.22, 3200m – 11:38.67, 5,000m – 19:17.00

Coach Notes:  Lauren comes from a small program where her mom helped coached her.  We feel like with her ability and the current/future student-athletes on the team she will blossom into a great athlete while here at Asheville.

Scarlett Beamon – West Johnston High School:  Benson, NC

PR’s:  1600m – 5:21.32, 3200m – 11:33.99, 5,000m – 19:11.00

Coach Notes:  Scarlett comes from the same high school program as fellow male recruit, Jeremy Gower.  Getting the opportunity to watch her race a couple times this year got the coaching staff excited about her potential and what she will be able to contribute to the team in the future.

Erin Dalton – Mills Godwin High School:  Henrico, VA

PR’s:  1600m – 5:11.42, 3200m – 11:08.54, 5,000m – 19:12.00

Coach Notes:  Erin is the fastest distance recruit this year and has run similar times to current Bulldog standouts, Emma Bussard and Melanie Kulesz out of high school.  We believe she will develop along the same way and will become a standout student-athlete for Asheville in the future.

Anna Gelbach – Myers Park High School:  Charlotte, NC

PR’s:  100m – 12.84, 200m – 25.74, 400m – 58.03

Coach Notes:  Anna is a tough competitor that reminds us of current Bulldog standout, Sarah Gentry.  She will add depth to our long sprints/middle distance crew and will be looked at as an immediate contributor her first season.

Alyssa Lashway – Jay Robinson High School:  Concord, NC

PR’s:  400m – 62.24, 800m – 2:22.19

Coach Notes:  Alyssa comes from the Charlotte area and will be looked at as a potential 1500m runner later in her career.  Like Anna, she will add depth to the long sprints/middle distance crew immediately.

Kassandra Pierre – Brooklyn Tech High School:  Brooklyn, NY

PR’s:  100m – 12.25, 400 hurdles – 62.95

Coach Notes:  Kassandra is our first female recruit from New York and is a student-athlete that will be able to contribute to the team immediately in everything from the short sprints, hurdles to relays.  Her best event appears to be the long hurdles, with her current personal record placing her in the top three this past year at the Big South Conference championships.

Kelsie Rubino – Lake Norman High School:  Mooresville, NC

PR’s:  800m – 2:22.86, 1600m – 5:21.72, 3200m – 11:55.66, 5,000m – 19:52.00

Coach Notes:  Kelsie is another Charlotte area product that the coaching staff believes has a huge upside due to her training background.  She will be looked at as a potential contributor in the middle to long distance events during the track season.
