BOONE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the season on Saturday at the Appalachian Invitational at the Holmes Center.

 

Each team picked up one first-place finish and had several other impressive performances.

 

Milan Ristic set a school record in the 55 hurdles in his first meet of the year. He finished first in the event with a time of 7.21.

 

Meredith Foster had the second best high jump in school history en route to winning the event on Saturday. Foster posted a jump of 1.67 meters.

 

"I'm really pleased at how we performed today at Appalachian," stated Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. "We had some great performances throughout the day all the way around with each team. We've thought we had a little more depth than we've had before, and today it began to show a little bit."

 

Courtney Henry had a busy day for the Bulldog men's team. He took fifth in the long jump (6.81), seventh in the high jump (1.81) and placed seventh in 55-meter dash (6.62).

 

John Bellard provided a highlight for Asheville in the high jump as he finished third with a leap of 1.96 meters.

 

Kurt Hibert came in sixth in the weight throw at 15.33 meters.

 

Andre Robinson competed in the pole vault and placed 10th at 4.00 meters.

 

On the distance side, Asheville went 2-3-4 in the mile. Patrick Osborne finished second (4:38), Ryan Catrine came in third (4:42) and Sebastian Paniagua fourth (4:45).

 

On the women's side, Molly Harkavy finished second in the 55 hurdles as she posted a time of 8.66.

 

Asheville went 3-4 in the mile. Scarlett Beamon took third (5:33), while Rachel Carson came in fourth place (5:38).

 

The 4x400 relay team finished in third place. Kassandra Pierre, Anna Gelbach, Molly Harkavy and Sarah Gentry finished with time of 4:12.30.

 

Both teams will be off until 2013. Both Bulldog squads compete again at the Niswonger Invitational at ETSU Jan. 18-19.
