ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will travel to Charlotte on Friday for the 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track Stadium.


The two-day meet starts Friday at 11 a.m. with field events. Running events are slated to start at 1 p.m. On Saturday, field events start up at 10 a.m. with running events gearing up one hour later at 11 a.m.


Both Bulldog teams opened the season last week at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Myrtle Beach. Anna Gelbach highlighted Asheville’s effort with a first-place finish in the 800 meters.


“Anna did a great job in her race, and we had some other positive results,” stated Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. “Hopefully, we’ll get better this weekend though this is going to be a tough meet with a lot of good teams in it from top to bottom. We just want improvement across the board.”


Both teams had other highlights throughout the weekend as each team opened their outdoor seasons.


The men’s team placed two runners in the top six in the 1500 meters. Patrick Osborne took third at 4:05.03, while Andy Thornburg placed sixth at 4:08.37.


The women’s team had some solid performances in field events. Argia Gibson came in second in the long jump as she had a jump of 5.25 meters. Corey McClintock took fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.86 meters.


John Bellard finished sixth in the javelin as he had a throw of 56.01 meters.


Other distance highlights came from Rachel Carson in the 5000 meters as she posted a time of 18:42.12 and came in fifth place.


In the 10,000 meters, Asheville had three runners finish in the top eight. Adrian Etheridge took sixth (38:45). Kasey Briggs came in seventh (39:01), while Erin Dalton finished eighth (39:09).


On the men’s side, Skyler Winchester finished fifth at a time of 32:45.18. Jeremy Gower came in ninth with a time of 9:08.98 in the 3,000 meters.


Kelsie Rubino finished ninth in the 1,500 meters at 4:51.36. Katie Gamble took 10th in the 3,000 steeplechase as she posted a time of 12:29.86.


In sprint action, Kassandra Pierre came in fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.24. Alyssa Lashway finished seventh in the 400 meters as she posted a time of 1:03.42.


Chase Steve took ninth in the 400 meters at 52.04.
