ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville head tennis coach Lise Gregory was named Big South Conference men's Coach of the Year Wednesday night. The announcement came at the league's awards dinner on the eve of the Big South Conference Championship Tournament that is being held in Asheville. The dinner was held at the Crowne Plaza.
Gregory, in her fifth year at the helm of the Bulldog squad, led her team to a 12-9 overall record and a 5-2 Big South mark. The 12 victories are the most by a Bulldog men's tennis team since 2005. This year was the best Conference regular-season finish as the Bulldogs enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 Presbyterian College on Thursday, April 19 at 1:30pm at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown. Gregory notched four first-place votes and eight points, just three points ahead of a three-way tie of Coastal Carolina's Chris Powers, Presbyterian College's Adam Herendeen and Radford's Mike Anderson. The honor marks her second Big South Coach of the Year plaudit as Gregory was named the Big South Coach of the Year for women's tennis in 2009.
Junior men's player Adrien Langeard was named to the league's All-Conference team for his play this season. Langeard posted a 12-9 singles record this season and 4-3 mark in BSC play at the #1 flight.
Asheville's #1 doubles team of Jonas Brobeck and Matt Waissen were also All-Conference. The duo has a 15-6 overall record and 6-1 worksheet in BSC action.
In addition, all three of the Bulldogs doubles team was honored as regular-season champions. The #2 doubles team of Thomas Rees and Adrien Langeard were a perfect 7-0 in league action and had an overall record of 16-4. The #3 doubles team of John Schubel and Pete Conaty went 11-7 overall and 6-1 in BSC matches.
Thomas Rees was named to the Big South All-Academic team. On the women's side, sophomore Zoe Hamel was honored for her work in the classroom and named the Big South All-Academic team.
The women's team will take on regular-season champion Winthrop Thursday at 8:30 a.m. That match will be played at the Asheville Racquet Club South.
