CONWAY, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team ended the regular season in the style with a thrilling 4-3 Big South Conference victory over Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

The win by the Bulldogs (13-9, 5-2 BSC) clinched a second-place finish for the Bulldogs in the final league standings, the highest finish ever for an Asheville team in Big South Conference play.  The Bulldogs will be the second seed in next week's Big South Conference championship that will be held at the Asheville Racquet Club downtown.  Pairings for the tournament will be announced on Sunday night.

Asheville picked up the all-important doubles point by winning all three matches. The #2 flight of Adrien Langeard and Thomas Rees finished the regular-season unbeaten in doubles play with an 8-5 victory. They'll enter the tournament with a 10-game winning streak.

Singles play was thrilling and exciting with three matches going three sets. Asheville got a win at #1 singles from Adrien Langeard as he downed Danny Heidecker, 6-1, 6-1. Coastal picked up victories at #3, #4 and #5 singles but the Bulldogs tied the match up with a three-set triumph from John Schubel at #6 singles. Schubel won in three sets over Sam Barr, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The match would be decided at #2 singles between Matt Waissen and Leo Christofides. Waissen dropped the first set, 6-7 but rallied to win the second set 6-3. He then was able to win a tie-breaker 7-2 to give the Bulldogs the dramatic victory. It was Asheville's first win over the Chanticleers in nine years.

"I'm really proud of this team for what they've accomplished this year," stated Bulldog coach Lise Gregory. "Two years ago, we were losing a lot of those three-sets matches in singles and losing 4-3. This year we've learned to win those three-set matches and now we've won a lot of 4-3 matches this year.

"We're very excited going into the tournament," added Gregory. "We'll have a new challenge being the second seed but we're looking forward to it."
