ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team is back in action this weekend at the Asheville Racquet Club downtown location as the Bulldogs play twice. Asheville hosts King College Saturday at 11 a.m. and then battles Big South rival Winthrop Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free to both matches.
The Bulldogs (7-6) are coming off a historic victory on Tuesday as Asheville knocked off Southern Conference juggernaut Furman, 4-3. It was the Dogs first ever tennis victory over the Paladins.
"We were very pleased to get that victory on Tuesday against Furman," commented Asheville coach Lise Gregory. "Our guys did a great job finding ways to win some tough matches against a good team on the road."
Asheville will have two tough tests this weekend starting with King College. The Tornados are 10-0 on the season. Winthrop, a perennial Big South power, will bring an 8-9 worksheet into Sunday's match. The Eagles are 1-1 in league play on the season.
"The Furman win was just fantastic but our guys know we have some work to do this weekend," explained Gregory. "King has a great team and the fact they're undefeated shows how they keep winning close matches. Winthrop is always good. We'll need to be at our best for both matches."
Senior Jonas Brobeck continues to lead the Bulldogs in singles action with a 9-4 overall record. He's teamed up with Matt Waissen to go 9-4 in doubles action.
