ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team heads to Coastal Carolina for the final Big South Conference regular-season match of the year on Saturday at 10 a.m. With a win, the Bulldogs would finish in second place in the final league standings, the highest regular-season finish ever for Asheville.
The Bulldogs (12-9, 4-2 BSC) enter the match a half-game behind the Chanticleers (12-3, 4-1 BSC) in the league standings. Asheville hosts the Big South Conference tennis championships next week at the Asheville Racquet Club from April 19-21.
The Bulldogs won on Wednesday as they downed Presbyterian College at home, 6-1.
"We're looking forward to Saturday match," commented assistant coach Tom Hand. "It's a big one for us but there's nothing but big matches left to play. Our guys have done a nice job improving this year and bouncing back from some tough losses. We've learned to win three-set matches.
"Coastal Carolina has a very good program," added Hand. "We're going to have to be at our best on Saturday to have a chance at winning."
Asheville has been solid across the board this season with a consistent line-up. The Bulldogs have been especially good in doubles action. The #2 flight of Thomas Rees-Adrien Langeard are 15-4 this season and a perfect 6-0 in league play. They'll carry a nine-game winning streak into Saturday's action. The #1 flight of Jonas Brobeck and Matt Waissen have a 14-6 overall record and 5-1 mark in league action, while the #3 doubles team of Pete Conaty and John Schubel are 10-7 overall and 5-1 in BSC matches.
In singles play, four different Bulldogs - Jonas Brobeck, Adrien Langeard, Thomas Rees and Matt Waissen - have all won at least 10 matches this year.
