ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Liberty won a close doubles point and split the singles matches to earn a hard-fought 4-3 Big South Conference men's tennis victory over homestanding UNC Asheville Friday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
The Flames improved to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big South. The Bulldogs dropped to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Liberty was able to win the doubles point by winning at #1 and #2 flights. The second flight was the toughest for Asheville. Liberty's duo of Dillon Segur and Jorge Azuero edged Daniel Kripak and John Schubel 9-8 in a tie-breaker. The Flames won the tie-breaker 8-4.
Asheville's Adrien Langeard continued his great season as he won at #1 flight, 6-3, 6-0 over Siium Tuus of Liberty. The Bulldogs then got three-set wins from Matt Waissen and Kripak at #2 and #3 flights respectively. Kripak fought back from a first set loss to Segur to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
But the Flames won at #4, #5 and #6 to claim the victory. Jorge Azuero, Egon Samaai and Stan Vaughan all won for Liberty in straight gets.
Asheville is back in action on Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Lees-McRae.
