CLEMSON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s tennis team made its fall debut this weekend at the Duckworth Fall Classic at Clemson and posted some impressive results.

 

The Bulldogs registered 23 wins during the weekend tournament with two singles players winning their consolation flight and one doubles team winning a consolation flight.

 

“We had a good weekend against some tough competition and enjoyed some positive results,” stated Asheville coach Lise Gregory. “I was really pleased to see how our veterans and newcomers played throughout the weekend. We still have some work to do but this is a nice start for us.”

 

Highlights from singles competition saw juniors’ Amryn Soldier and Emily McNall winning their respective flights consolation round. Both bounced back from losing first round matches to win their next two matches to finish first on that side of the draw. Soldier won flight seven by downing Mocia Agardo of Winthrop, 6-0, 6-1. McNall won flight eight with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Megan Evans of Charleston Southern.

 

Asheville also had two players earn third-place finishes in their flights. Each won their first-round match, lost in the second round but bounced back to win the third-place match. Gillian Lewis, in flight seven, knocked off Maria Sanchez of Wofford, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 to claim third place.

 

In flight eight, junior Christine Boissevain defeated Taylor Carlson of Wofford, 6-2, 7-5 to pick up third place.

 

Sophomore Ericka Rivero went 2-2 advanced to the consolation final in flight two. Freshman Carolina Sherrer reached the consolation final in flight 10. In flight nine, Lauren Brooke and Hunter Hal both won consolation matches to reach the consolation finals but did not play.

 

In doubles action, Solider and Boissevain won the consolation round of flight two. They knocked off Cohen-Zoske of USC Upstate 8-7 in the finals.

 

McNall and Lewis teamed up to finish third in flight three action. In flight four, Brooke-Sherrer reached the consolation finals.
