ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's tennis team will play next in the first round of the Big South Conference championships at Winthrop on Thursday. The Bulldogs are seeded seventh in the tourney and will face second-seeded Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
It has been a tough year for Lise Gregory's club. Asheville will bring a 6-15 record into Thursday's match. The Bulldogs have been plagued by injuries all season and have only played about half of their matches with a full squad.
"Our ladies have battled the whole year but we simply haven't been healthy for much of the year," explained Gregory. "It's hard to win matches when you are giving up two points right off the bat. To our credit, we've come close a few times."
Asheville fell to Coastal Carolina at home on March 26, 6-1.
"We competed pretty well against Coastal Carolina last month and had some close matches," stated Gregory. "If we could find a way to win a couple of those close matches we could make things interesting on Thursday.
"I know that our team will compete hard until the final point," added Gregory.
Asheville has been led this season by senior Stephanie Schon and junior Devon Cavanaugh. Both have posted winning records in singles action this year. Schon is 12-9 on the season, while Cavanaugh has posted a 10-6 singles mark.
