ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville junior Zoe Hamel earned Big South All-Conference honors in singles and was named to the league’s All-Academic team on Wednesday night at the conference’s awards banquet at Winthrop.


Freshman Ericka Rivero was named a flight winner at #3 singles.  The Bulldogs will begin play in the Big South champions on Thursday when they take on Campbell at 3:30 p.m. at the Winthrop Tennis Center.


Hamel went 10-9 overall at #1 singles flight. She went 5-3 in league play. The junior from France just missed being named Scholar-Athlete of the Year as she was edged out by one vote by Winthrop senior Giovanna Portioli. Hamel has a 3.98 GPA and is majoring in Economics. Portioli had 72 votes from the league’s Sports Information Directors, compared to 71 for Hamel.


Rivero has enjoyed a great rookie year for the Bulldogs and helped lead Asheville to a 12-9 overall record. She has 15-6 record in singles with a 7-2 mark in league play.
