Women's Tennis Falls to Winthrop, 4-0

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - #1 seed Winthrop downed #8 seed UNC Asheville 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference women's tennis championship Thursday morning at the Asheville Racquet Club South.

The Lady Eagles (11-10) advance to the semifinals of the tournament on Friday where they will face the winner of the Gardner-Webb-Radford Friday at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs end their season with a 6-16 overall record.

Winthrop took the doubles point as the #2 team of Sandra Herrera and Givanna Portioli downed Jenna Dodge and Amryn Soldier, 8-0 and #3 team of Camille Amrani and Ekin Gunaysu downed Devon Cavanaugh and Amie Cloer, 8-2.

In singles action, Yasmine Alkema won at #1 over Emily McNall, 6-0, 6-1. Portiolli downed Dodge at #4, 6-0, 6-0. Gunaysu also won 6-0, 6-0 over Amie Cloer.

For the Bulldogs, senior Devon Cavanaugh won the first set 6-1 and was tied 1-1 before the match was over.
