ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team makes its first Big South Conference road trip this weekend as the Bulldogs play at Radford Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by match at defending BSC champion Liberty at 2 p.m.

Asheville (10-6, 1-0 BSC) opened league play with a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb last Friday night and then slipped past USC Upstate at home on Tuesday, 3-1.

The Bulldogs will be tested in both places. Asheville faces a Radford team that is 12-6 (1-0 BSC) on the season and won the last three meetings between the teams. The Lady Flames are just 1-13 (0-1 BSC) on the season but have been faced a strenuous non-conference schedule and endured some key injuries.

“We have a big challenge this weekend,” stated Asheville coach Frederico Santos. “Radford has had our number the past few years and I don’t care what Liberty’s record, that’s still a good team that is well-coached.

“Our team simply needs to focus on playing consistent volleyball,” added Santos. “We’ll need to play as good as we can to have a shot at winning at either place.”

Meredith Foster led Asheville on Tuesday with a season-high 18 kills. The Bulldogs also got a nice performance from freshman Shelby Erickson with 14 kills.

Senior blocker Anna Moore continues to lead the Bulldogs in hitting percentage (.339), blocks (1.08) and service aces (21). Sophomore outside hitter Christine Lakatos tops the club in kills with a 3.51 per set average. Senior libero Rachel Wells leads Asheville in digs (5.19) and is second in aces (20). Sophomore setter Katie Davis is averaging 10.31 assists per set.

BULLDOG NOTES

Asheville is 2-2 on the road this season and 7-6 overall in matches away from Justice Center.

The Bulldogs last win at Radford came in the 2011 season, while the last time they won at Liberty came in the 2009 campaign.

Asheville looks to go to 2-0 in league play for the first time since the 2010 season and 3-0 for the first since 2009.

The Bulldogs won just 12 matches last year and midway through the season already have 10 wins.

Anna Moore is second in the Big South in hitting percentage and fourth in blocks.

Christine Lakatos is second in the Big South in kills.

Katie Davis is third in the league in assists.
