Bulldogs Defeat Charleston Southern in Four Sets

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Cindi Miller recorded 22 kills and 14 digs as UNC Asheville outlasted Charleston Southern 3-1 in Big South Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match, 23-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-20.

The victory was Asheville's (18-10, 10-4 BSC) sixth's straight. Kelsey Benorden added 16 kills and 10 digs for the home team. Hallie Morse had 40 assists, four kills, eight digs and three blocks. Alex Stewart registered a game-high 22 digs. Meredith Foster added nine kills. Holly Shelton had five kills and seven blocks.  

Charleston Southern (11-18, 5-9 BSC) enjoyed a tremendous match from Amanda Hill who had 21 kills and 18 digs. Kayla Klinger finished with 10 kills, 13 digs and three service aces.  Amberle Trinder had nine kills. Tricia Rodl had a team-high 20 digs.

"This is a great win against a team that I really respect in Charleston Southern," commented Bulldog coach Julie Torbett. "Amanda Hill is a tremendous player who is always tough to stop.

"I thought we got better as the match went on," added Torbett. "Our middles did a great job matching what Charleston Southern did today. We got a good match from Cindi and Kelsey and Hallie Morse played well, too. This is a big win for us this afternoon."

Charleston Southern led the entire first set as it took advantage of some hitting and service errors to built a 19-13 lead. Hill had five kills in the opening set. The Bulldogs close to one point on two different occasions but Hill's kill gave set one to the Lady Bucs, 25-23.

In the second  set, there were 15 times and five lead changes. Asheville had set point twice only to see CSU get a point to even the set. Finally Miller picked up two kills to end the set and even the match at 1-1 as the Bulldogs went to the break tied after a 27-25 win.

The home team controlled the third set most of the way as Asheville won 25-16. The Bulldogs went up 8-2 early thanks to some CSU errors but the Bucs rallied and took a one-point lead twice. Asheville took control of the set midway through as Holly Shelton had three kills and three blocks to help the Bulldog cause. The home team won 25-16.

In the fourth set, there were 10 ties and five lead changes. Tied at 18-18, the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 to take the lead for good. Two Benorden service aces sparked the run. Asheville didn't allow CSU to get any closer. Senior Jenna Dover added two kills to seal the Bulldogs sixth straight win.

Both teams play Gardner-Webb next. Asheville heads to Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at 7 p.m. CSU entertains the Runnin' Bulldogs Friday (Nov. 12) at 7 p.m.
