Santos Introduced As New Head Volleyball Coach
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Department of Athletics hosted a press conference for new head coach Frederico Santos Friday morning at Justice Center.
“We are very happy to welcome Frederico Santos back to UNC Asheville,” declared Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. “He did a great job as an assistant coach with our program and then proved himself as a head coach at Barry University in Miami. “
“I wish to thank Janet Cone and the search committee for allowing me to come back home to UNC Asheville,” stated Santos. “Asheville is home for me, my wife Nathalie, my son Gabriel, my daughter Tatiana. We’re excited to be back and can’t wait for the season to get started.”
In three seasons as head coach at Barry, Santos led the Buccaneers to a 46-31 overall record and an appearance in the South Regional Division II Tournament in 2010.
Last season, Santos led Barry to a solid year as the Buccaneers posted a 16-7 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Sunshine State Conference. The Bucs picked up important wins over #22 Saint Leo and #25 Rollins in the regular season. Propelled by their conference play, the Bucs returned to the NCAA South Region Tournament for the first time since 2006. Julia Teixeira earned Sunshine State Conference player of the Year, Daktronics South Region Player of the Year and spots on the First-Team All-America team for Daktronics and the AVCA.
In 2009, the Bucs posted a 15-12 overall mark and went 6-10 in conference. In 2008, Santos' first season, the Bucs went 15-12; an improvement over 2007. The Bucs improved their conference record as well, going 5-11 on the season.
A native of Brazil, Santos has more than 20 years of international playing and coaching experience at all levels of the sport. He spent eight seasons at UNC Asheville, including the last three as associate head coach under former head coach Julie Torbett. Santos assisted in all phases of the Bulldog program including recruiting, on-court coaching, travel and pre-game setup. While at Asheville, Santos helped the Bulldogs to a 135-124 overall record. The Bulldogs reached the Big South Conference Championship match three times during his tenure and won the regular season championship in 2002. The 2002 team was the most improved team in the country that season as Asheville finished with a 26-8 record.
Santos coached the Biltmore Juniors for more than five years, leading the club to national finishes in each of the past five years, including championships at the Asheville Hi Neighbor tournament in 2003 and 2004.
Santos has been playing volleyball all his life beginning with club teams in Rio de Janeiro. He moved to Reno, Nevada in 1990 and starred for the University of Nevada-Reno club team from 1992-1996 where he was a setter. His club team was ranked fifth nationally by USA Today. In 1998, Santos played for the Reno Volleyball Club team as both a setter and outside hitter, leading the club to the USAV Nationals in Tucson, Arizona.
His coaching experience includes stops in Brazil, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland and Reno. Santos coached the Stjarnan Club team in Reykjavik, Iceland. He led the club to a 7-3 record in 2000 and a first place finish in the fall tournament. The team also finished runner-up in the Icelandic Cup and Icelandic Championships.
