The loss dropped Asheville's record to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in league play. Gardner-Webb improved to 6-14 overall and 2-4 in BSC action. The Runnin' Bulldogs are a perfect 5-0 at home this season.
Asheville was led in the match by Holly Shelton with 11 kills. Cindi Miller added eight kills and seven digs. Meredith Foster finished with seven kills, while Anna Moore had six kills. Jaimie Dorfman contributed three service aces and five digs.
The home team was led by Lauren Evans with 14 kills, while Laura Wilcox contributed 11 kills. Gardner-Webb hit .333 for the match.
In the first set, the Bulldogs battled back from a big early deficit to close to 15-14. But the Runnin' Bulldogs seized the momentum after taking a time out and racing to a 25-19 win.
The second set had GWU leading most of the way until a Miller kill gave the Bulldogs an 18-17 lead. Both teams battled back and forth from that point before a Shelton kill tied the set at 23-23. Wilcox came up with two key kills to give the home team a 2-0 lead at intermission.
In the third set, Gardner-Webb again led for most of the set but the Bulldogs tied the set, once at 18-18 and at 23-23. However, Asheville had two errors on the final two points to hand the Runnin' Bulldogs the set at match.
The victory by Gardner-Webb gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their first ever BSC win over Asheville and first triumph over the Bulldogs since the 2006 season.
Asheville returns to action next week, as the Bulldogs will take on Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. next Friday night.
