CHARLESTON, S.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team will be the fourth seed and take on fifth-seeded Campbell Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Championship tournament that will be held at Charleston Southern. Thursday's match and the entire championship will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.uncabulldogs.com.
The Bulldogs (14-13) hope to snap a four-game losing streak in the match. Asheville lost two five-set matches at home last weekend against Radford and Liberty. The Liberty match went down to the wire with the Bulldogs falling 15-13 in the fifth set. However, first-year coach Frederico Santos was not the least bit discouraged with the loss against the regular-season champion Flames.
"We played a fantastic match against Liberty, and our girls should be proud," admitted Santos afterwards. "This was a great confidence builder for us going into the tournament."
Nothing has changed Santos mind after a few days.
"We play like we did against Liberty on Saturday then we have a great chance to win some matches in the tournament," declared Santos. "Campbell will be a tough match. They have a good team and are well-coached. We will need an effort like Saturday to win."
Senior outside hitter Cindi Miller tops the team in kills with a 3.53 per set average. She's second on the club in digs at 2.94. Sophomore Anna Moore is second on kills with a 2.57 average. Sophomore Alex Stewart tops the club in digs with a 4.38 average.
The teams played earlier this year at Justice Center with Asheville slipping past Campbell, 3-1. This will be the first time the teams have ever played in the Big South Conference Tournament.
UNC Asheville has gone to the semifinals of the Big South Tournament in five of the last six seasons.
Cindi Miller leads the Big South in kills per set at 3.53.
Hallie Morse is the only setter in the Big South Conference to have two matches with more than 60 assists.
Asheville is second in the Big South in hitting percentage (.188) and digs (15.24)
Jaimie Dorfman is second in the league in service aces (0.36) and Alex Stewart is second in digs (4.38).
