CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team rallied for a key Big South Conference road Friday night at Charleston Southern.

The Bulldogs (14-9, 4-3 BSC) trailed 2-1 before storming back to win the final two sets and slip past the Buccaneers before a packed house at the CSU Fieldhouse. Asheville won the match 25-22, 14-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-9.

“I’m really proud of our team for winning this match,” commented Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “We played a team that played very well in Charleston Southern in a tough atmosphere. Our club found a way to get it done with our backs to the wall. It’s never easy to win a conference game on the road. This was a big win for us.”

Asheville was led by a career-high 24 kills from sophomore Christine Lakatos. She also added 13 digs in the victory. Anna Moore added 12 kills and seven blocks. Madison Vaughn came off the bench to contribute nine kills. She played in place of Meredith Foster who injured her ankle prior to the match. Rachel Wells sparked the defense with 24 digs and five service aces. Alex Stewart chipped in 14 digs.

After losing a close third set, 25-23 to fall behind 2-1, the Bulldogs went to work. They never trailed in the fourth set but CSU kept close. With the set tied at 17-17, Asheville scored the final eight points to tie the set up at 25-17. Lakatos led the final run with four kills. Stewart did a great job serving and was serving for the final seven points.

The Bulldogs continued the momentum in the fifth set. Lakatos had four kills to help spark Asheville to an 8-3 lead. The Lady Bucs scored three straight points to get the crowd going again and cut the lead to 8-6.

But Asheville answered the CSU charge. The Bulldogs scored the next five points to seize control of the match again. Wells finished the run with two straight service aces to push the lead to 13-6.

The home team made one more run to close to 14-9. But setter Katie Davis finished the victory with a kill as Asheville enjoyed its first league road win of the season.

The Bulldogs don’t have long to enjoy the win as Asheville journeys to Coastal Carolina for a key Big South battle starting at 1 p.m.
