ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team hits the road this weekend for two important Big South Conference road matches. The Bulldogs play at Presbyterian College Friday night at 7 p.m. and head to Winthrop on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Both matches can be seen for free on the Big South Digital Network under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville (16-10, 6-4 BSC) looks to stay in third place and maybe even move up in the Big South Conference standings this weekend. The Bulldogs are in a four-way tie for third place and a game out of second place heading into this weekend’s action. Asheville finishes the regular season next weekend at home against Radford and Liberty.

The Bulldogs look for season sweeps against both teams. Asheville downed Winthrop 3-1 last month at Justice Center, winning a dramatic third set, 31-29 before downed Presbyterian College 3-0 the next day.

Asheville coach Frederico Santos expects very tough matches each day.

“We are going on the road to play two teams that play extremely well at home,” declared Santos. “Presbyterian has posted some great wins at home this year, and it’s always tough to win at Winthrop. I understand its Winthrop’s homecoming so there’s going to be a great crowd and that will make it even tougher.”

The Bulldogs enjoyed two great wins last weekend at home as they slipped past High Point 3-1 and Campbell, 3-0. Rachel Wells was sensational in the back row with a career-high 36 kills in both matches. She’s third nationally in digs with a 5.90 per set average.

Asheville had good all-around play last weekend with Christine Lakatos putting down 29 kills, and Anna Moore contributing 19 kills, seven blocks and five service aces. Sophomore setter Katie Davis had 75 assists and 11 kills.

“What I liked about both matches last weekend is we got better and better as each match went on,” stated Santos. “We will need to play with high energy and be ready from the start this weekend.”
