ROCK HILL, S.C. – After rallying for a hard fought 3-2 victory over Presbyterian College last evening in Clinton, S.C., the UNC Asheville volleyball team fell to Big South Conference foe Winthrop in five sets on Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C., falling 25-12, 23-25, 25-11, 23-25, 15-7.

The Bulldogs struggled to get their offense on track against the Lady Eagles, hitting for a .067 clip with 33 kills as a team. Meanwhile, Winthrop tallied 79 kills as a team with a .350 hitting percentage. With the victory the Lady Eagles improve to 15-12 overall with a 6-7 mark in conference while Asheville drops to 17-11 and 7-5 in the league.

Freshman outside hitter Shelby Erickson led the way for the Bulldogs offensively with 10 kills, with Christine Lakatos chipping in 9 kills to the Bulldogs’ total. Katie Davis tallied 24 assists for the Blue & White, with Rachel Wells posting 23 digs defensively.

WU’s Rachel Lenz tallied 21 kills to lead all players in the match, with nine blocks and one service ace. Fellow Eagles Irene Ojukwu (19), Jackie Landers (18) and Alina Sopizhuk (11) all recorded double-digit kills for Winthrop in the victory.

Jessi Vicic recorded an impressive 70 assists in directing the Winthrop offense, while libero Michelle Steagall tallied 20 digs to lead all Lady Eagles.

The Bulldogs did record five service aces as a team, while Winthrop posted 15 service errors overall.

The Blue & White have only two regular season matches left this season as the Bulldogs will host Liberty on Friday evening before welcoming Radford to the Justice Center on Saturday afternoon.
