CHARLOTTE, N.C.– UNC Asheville middle blocker Anna Moore was named to the Big South Conference’s Second Team, freshman setter Katie Davis was named to the All-Freshman Team and senior rightside hitter Chelsie Kenley was named to the All-Academic team, it was announced Wednesday at a special awards presentation on the campus of Gardner-Webb University.

Moore led the Bulldogs and was ninth in the league in hitting percentage with a mark of .277. She was also seventh in the league in blocks with 103 and was eighth in the league in kills with 287. Moore recorded double-digit kills in 15 matches, including a season-high 18 kills against UNCG on Sept. 7.

Davis led the Bulldogs and was fifth in the league in assists with 993 on the season. She was named the Big South Freshman of the Week twice on the year, and tallied 30 or more assists in 16 matches. Davis recorded a career-best 58 assists against UNCG on Sept. 7, recording over 50 assists in four matches.

Kenley, a senior biology major, is currently sixth on the team in kills with 65 and fourth in blocks with 44. She was named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll in her first three years on campus, while also earning a spot on UNC Asheville’s Athletic Director’s 3.0 & Above Club on six occasions.

The UNC Asheville volleyball team will be the sixth seed in the Big South Conference Championship this week that will be held at Gardner-Webb University starting on Thursday.

The Bulldogs will face third-seeded High Point in the quarterfinals of the tourney on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Asheville lost to the Panthers on the road back on Oct. 26, 3-0.

Liberty outside hitter Caroline Douglas has been voted the 2012 Big South Conference Volleyball Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while Lady Flames head coach Shane Pinder was selected Coach of the Year by the League’s head coaches. In addition, High Point’s Molly Barlow and Liberty’s Becca Haraf were voted Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the League’s sports information directors.

Douglas becomes the first Big South volleyball player in Conference history to be voted both Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.  A redshirt-freshman from Greenville, N.C., Douglas was a three-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree and led the Conference with 404 kills, 3.67 kills per set and ranked sixth with a .292 attack percentage.  In Conference play, she put down 213 swings and averaged 4.18 kills. Douglas recorded 24 double-digit kill matches, including two 20-kill matches, and tallied at least 10 kills in 13 of Liberty’s 14 Big South matches.  She put down a career-high 26 kills in Liberty’s win at High Point, tying for the most kills in a Conference match this season.

Pinder is now the Big South’s first three-time Volleyball Coach of the Year honoree, as he also won the award in 2007 and 2010.  He directed his team to the Big South regular-season championship in 2012 with a 12-2 League mark, the program’s sixth consecutive League title, and a 22-7 overall record – the school’s Big South-record 12th 20-win season.  The Lady Flames won their last seven Big South matches and clinched the No. 1 seed for the fourth time in Pinder’s nine years as head coach.  Liberty leads the Big South in hitting percentage (.252), kills per set (12.95) and service aces (172).  In League matches, the Lady Flames were tops with a .262 hitting mark.

Barlow, a senior defensive specialist from Phoenix, Ariz., is a three-time member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.  The elementary education major carries a 3.98 GPA and was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Team late last week.  During the season Barlow became the eighth player in High Point history to record 1,000 career digs.

Haraf, a junior defensive specialist from Arlington Heights, Ill., is a 4.0 student studying biology and pre-medicine.  She posted one of the top GPA’s among Liberty’s athletics teams during her first two seasons at Liberty.  Haraf is fourth on the squad with 207 digs and ranks eighth in the Big South with a 0.32 service aces per set.

The volleyball awards presentation opens the 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting, as play begins Thursday, Nov. 15 with four quarterfinal matches.  Gardner-Webb is hosting the Championship at Paul Porter Arena.
