BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville won the first two sets but could not close out Gardner-Webb as the red-hot Runnin’ Bulldogs edged the Bulldogs, 3-2 Friday night in Big South Conference volleyball action at Porter Gym.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs defeated Asheville 19-25, 14-25, 25-20, 28-26 and 15-12 to post its fourth 3-2 fifth-set win of the season, all of which have come in Big South Conference play.
The Bulldogs led 15-11 in the fourth set before falling behind 22-20. Asheville fought off three set points before the home team forced the fifth set with two points and a 28-26 win.
For Asheville, Christine Lakatos recorded a match-high 19 kills, to go along with her 10 digs, while Meredith Foster (12), Shelby Erickson (11) and Anna Moore (10) all spiked double digit kills in the loss. Libero Rachel Wells picked up 35 digs, while setter Katie Davis dished out 53 assists and posted 10 digs over the five set match.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs record to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in the Big South Conference. It also ended a six-game winning streak for Asheville in five-set matches dating back to last year. Gardner-Webb has won four of its last five matches in five sets.
The Bulldogs are off for a week before getting back into Big South Conference play on the road next Friday night Oct. 25 at Charleston Southern starting at 7 p.m.
