Volleyball Wins Third Straight by Downing PC in Four Sets

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Rachel Wells has six service aces and 19 digs, while Anna Moore had 11 blocks as UNC Asheville downed visiting Presbyterian College, 3-1 Friday in Big South Conference volleyball action at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15.

Asheville (10-7, 3-1 BSC) won its third straight match, while the Blue Hose (6-12, 2-2 BSC) lost for only the second time in its last six matches.

The Bulldogs did a great job blocking on the night as they finished with a team total of 17. Meredith Foster and Chelsie Kenley added six blocks each.  Holly Shelton finished with five blocks.

Senior outside hitter Cindi Miller had 14 kills, eight digs and two service aces.

PC was led by Allison Brown with 16 kills, while Rachel Hall contributed 10. Presley Mabrey had five service aces for the visitors. The Blue Hose did a good job blocking during the match and finished with 11 blocks.

"This is a very good win for us," commented Asheville coach Frederico Santos. "We got better as the match went on and beat a very good Presbyterian College team.

"Our blocking was outstanding," added Santos. "Everyone really stepped up and played well and picked up an important conference win."

The first three sets were extremely close. In the first set, Asheville led most of the way but never by very much. The Bulldogs biggest lead was at three points at 20-17. Miller got two kills to finish off the first set and give Asheville a 25-23 win. The Blue Hose had 13 hitting errors in the opening set.

In the second set, there were 14 tie scores until the Asheville surged ahead and led 23-21. But the visitors roared back. Led by the serving of Andrea Barman and some clutch blocking, PC scored the final four points for a 25-23 win and tying the match at intermission, 1-1.

In the third set, there were 11 ties and six lead changes. With the set tied at 22-22, the Bulldogs took the lead on a serving error from the Blue Hose at 23-22. A block from Moore and Shelton put Asheville up 24-22. After a PC kill from Brown cut the lead to 24-23, the Bulldogs were able to get the set win on a block from Moore and Hallie Morse.

The fourth set was all Asheville. With Wells serving, the Bulldogs scored six straight points to grab a 10-3 lead. The home team had three blocks in the run and got two aces from Wells.

The Bulldogs were in control after that and won the fourth set handily 25-15.

Asheville is back at home on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs entertain Big South-leader Winthrop at 4:30 p.m. Presbyterian College travels to Gardner-Webb at Noon.
